The construction of eCondos isn’t the only new development along Yonge and Eglinton. Area residents have also been witness to the expansion of public transportation through The Crosstown, a light rail transit line that will run across Eglinton Avenue between Mount Dennis and Kennedy Station.
The project, conceived in 2007 is slated for completion in 2021 and will consist of a 19-kilometre corridor (including a 10-kilometre underground portion) composed of 25 stations and stops linking to 54 surface bus routes, three subway stations and GO Transit lines. The Crosstown project will also include the design of fully accessible stations, upgrades to streetscaping, trail and pedestrian connections as well as providing the largest single expansion of bicycle parking in Toronto.
Tunneling was completed in August of 2016 seeing LRT activity shift to the construction of future Crosstown stations, part of which includes the closure of the underground pedestrian tunnel at Yonge Street and Eglinton leading from the Eglinton TTC subway station to the Riocan Yonge-Eglinton Centre. Although it will mean an increase in pedestrian traffic both above and below ground, access to area businesses still will be maintained.
Patience has been a virtue for area residents during this new transit expansion, but it remains an exciting project which will connect urban dwellers (including those at eCondos) directly the best the City of Toronto has to offer from workplaces and educational institutions to fine dining and entertainment. The Eglinton Crosstown LRT will provide an even greater convenience to homeowners making condo living in the Greater Toronto Area even greater.
