Scotiabank Nuit Blanche returns tomorrow night for its annual all night art festival. From dusk until dawn, more than 110 contemporary art projects created by hundreds of artists will be exhibited across the downtown core. While the spotlight this year is on Ai Weiwei’s Forever Bicycles sculpture in Nathan Phillips Square, there are a handful of smaller but just as stunning projects that deserve equal attention. In Yorkville for example, there are four exhibits that we recommend you check out.
The Illusion of Linear Time
The Four Seasons Hotel in Yorkville plays host to this sculpture made of 400 pounds of transparent plastic and 4,000 feet of fibre optic metamorphosed into an organic futuristic sculpture. According to artist Kagame Murray, the piece represents “weakly interactive colliding universes.”
Nothing is better
This one is perfect for music lovers. The exhibit is a surreal science musical documentary described as an “energetic, amusing and thought-provoking report on the condition of man from the other side of zero.” It will be showing at the Church of the Redeemer at 162 Bloor Street West.
Bata Shoe Museum
The Bata Shoe Museum is one of the Toronto’s top attractions so it’s only natural that it would play host to one of the city’s biggest parties. The museum will be hosting three interactive exhibits this year for Nuit Blanche.
Ad Astra
A team of soon-to-be-architects and graduates of Ryerson University will be transforming a small space in the museum into an artificial night sky, giving visitors the opportunity to experience a surreal, interactive and infinite environment.
RevitaLight
RevitaLight will transform the interior of the Bata Shoe Museum into an interactive public space, allowing participants to trigger and operate the work using body movement.
Light_Scape
Light_Scape is a dynamic landscape of light. Users interact with Velcro light cubes, altering the character of the landscape as the night progresses. The Velcro’s fuzzy texture diffuses light and produces a soft pulsing glow, which when accumulated, creates the illusion of a living organism. Light_Scape is meant to reflect the social nature of Nuit Blanche as it evolves throughout the night.
Drift:Synthesis
300+ TTC subway platform screens across Toronto will feature videos created by Marcin Ignac and Lorenzo Oggiano of beautiful, elaborate, impossible organisms created through 3D modeling and generative art practices. The installation both literally and conceptually takes the idea of ‘reaching toward the stars’ and transforms a small space into an immersive and ever-changing interactive environment. If you’re in Yorkville, look out for the installations at St. George, Bay and Bloor-Yonge subway stations.
