Every year, the buildings get taller, stronger, fancier and some would say, better. Being architecture and design-loving nerds, we always keep our eyes peeled to see what’s in store for the near future. This year, we’ve got a whole lot to look forward to.
Here are some projects we can’t wait to see completed or started later this year:
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) Headquarters – Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
There is rarely a list of buildings to watch out for without mention of the UAE, since the nation has become a powerhouse of awesome buildings and developments for several years now. The ADNOC Headquarters will be 1,122 feet high (76 floors) and finished later this year. It will also be built to LEED Gold green building certification.

Dr Chau Chak wing for Sydney University’s UTS Business School – Sydney, Australia
World-renowned architect Frank Gehry’s first building in Australia is set to open this February, though it was completed in 2014. The building looks a little like a tree, with windows and ‘things’ popping out and that’s exactly what Gehry was going for.
“Thinking of it [as] a tree house came tripping out of my head”, says Gehry, “a growing, learning organism with many branches of thought”.
Huangshan Mountain Village – Anhui Province, China
Beijing studio, MAD, is working on completing the mountain village of apartment blocks and other community facilities later this year. The plans were revealed in November 2012, and we’ve been waiting ever since to see the buildings inspired by the topographical layers of the landscape ever since.
Lofoten Opera Hotel, Glåpen, Norway
Architecture firm Snøhetta unveiled images of a hotel last year that will wind across a rocky terrain in Norway’s Lofoten archipelago. It will be a low-rise hotel, but nonetheless magnificent. We think those who love nature will really love staying in this modern piece of architecture. It’s set to have apartments, hotels, spa facilities, hiking resources and an amphitheatre. According to Snøhetta, “the local beach culture and storstuga are included in the project,” and in fact exemplifies it.
