The Travel Bug: Dinner with a View

September 11th, 2014

It must be because we have the September blues that come every single year after a great summer, but we’ve still got that travel bug! You can probably tell because we’ve written about cool treehouses from all around the world, and amazing vacation homes all in a span of a month. It won’t stop – we recently came across some really unique restaurants in the most unusual places and thought we’d share with you our favourites.

The Seaside Restaurant, Italy

Located in the city of Polignano a Mare in the south of Italy, The Seaside Restaurant is a lovely restaurant … in a cave. It’s only open from May to October (probably because of the weather/water levels) but the view out into the Adriatic Sea is undoubtedly remarkable. The restaurant is about 74 feet above sea level, and serves fine Italian cuisine. It’s not very new either, the cave served as a feasting area for nobility back in the 1700s.

Ithaa, Maldives

If you’re afraid of drowning or dining alongside the fishes, then this restaurant is probably not for you. Ithaa is the world’s first underwater restaurant and it’s located in one our favourite vacation hotspots in the world: the Maldives!

It’s been rated the “Most Beautiful Restaurant in the World” and that could be because it offers 180-degree panoramic views of the beautiful coral gardens surrounding it.  The cuisine of choice? Contemporary European. You can even book the venue for a wedding!

Treepod Dining, Bangkok

treepod

Nope, still not over tree houses! How cool is the idea of eating in a bamboo pod high up in the sky, with the servers zip-lining to you?! You don’t have to do any zip-lining though, they hoist you up in the sky once you’re seated in the pod. The option of eating in the trees is offered at the popular Six Senses’ Soneva Kiri on the remote Thai island of Kood. Just think about the beautiful views!

SnowRestaurant, Finland

snowcastle

Located in the SnowCastle of Kemi in Finland, we think you’re going to have to pack a down-filled jacket for this dinner party as the indoor temperature is set to -5 degrees celsius.. For those unfamiliar with the SnowCastle, it’s completely made of snow and is only open four months of the year. But don’t worry – just because the temperature is very cold, they still serve warm dishes like soup and apple pie! They’re taking reservations for their next season – which starts in January 2015.

If you’re more of a daredevil, you might be interested in hosting a Dinner in the Sky – but don’t invite us! We’re not afraid of heights, but we are afraid of hanging around in an unenclosed area that high up! We’ll stick to the Atmosphere restaurant (the world’s highest restaurant from ground level) at the Burj Khalifa, thanks!

Have you dined anywhere unusual in your travels? We’d love to know!
