Five Urban Yard Ideas We Love

November 10th, 2015

Have you heard about our newest project, Estates on Bayview? There is so much to be excited about in this luxury townhome community – we love the family-friendly area, the proximity to transit and highways, the amazing schools and shopping, and that’s just the start. While we’re not releasing all the details just yet, there is one thing we can tell you – these homes will feature gorgeous, lush, oversize lawns. It’s rare to find a piece of land to call your own in an urban centre, which is why we’re so excited to be able to offer them in Estates on Bayview.

While leaves are being raked and pots put away for winter all over Toronto, we’re doing a little dreaming about next year’s lawn trends and what we can get cracking on this summer. To get you as excited about yard possibilities as we are, here are five trends we absolutely can’t wait to try.

Edible Gardens

We’re all becoming more conscious of what we eat and where it comes from – why not take a stab at growing your own produce? Whether you want to turn your whole space into rows of greenery, or just grow enough tomatoes to prove you can do it, make sure you choose veggies (and fruits!) that are suitable to Canada’s varied climate. Our growing season isn’t as long as many other places, but you can still grow everything from herbs to chard to gourds if you pay attention to the weather. Here are some gorgeous ideas from Gardenista:

Paving Stones

Paving stones can be hit-or-miss – lay them improperly and they’ll stick out like a sore thumb, but mix them into the overall landscape and you can add both structure and flow to your outdoor space. We’re loving luxe materials like slate over traditional concrete or asphalt paving stones. Mixing textures, like loose gravel or even grass, between your paver stones can add visual interest that’s low-maintenance.

Writer’s Cabins

Flexible working arrangements are becoming more common, so whether you work remotely all the time or split your working hours between home and office, it’s always nice to have a dedicated space where you can put your nose to the grindstone. It just makes sense to be able to separate your work life from your home life, and working inside one of these gorgeous designs is sure to inspire whatever you’re working on. With the tiny homes trend in full swing, there’s a solution out there to fit everything you need to work in one of these compact spaces.

Native Plants

Native plants are the latest sustainability trend, and we’re loving it! Anything that brings more of Ontario’s gorgeous natural beauty into our backyards is okay with us. Plus, native plants are bound to thrive, and you’ll use less effort and water trying to create a hospitable environment for them. And don’t think that your options are all shrubs and trees – there are hundreds of gorgeous flowering plants to add some colour to your space, too. Check out a full list here.

Seating Spaces

Patio season is short here in Toronto, so it’s important to make the most of it while it’s still here! There are so many gorgeous hardscaping and patio options right now that there’s never been a better time to start crafting your personal oasis. Here are a few gorgeous patio ideas that caught our eye:

Textiles that can easily be moved indoors for winter bring this space alive for warmer weather.
